Taoyuan Daxi holds the 3rd International Wood Furniture Design Competition with a total prize of NT$1.4 million.

Taoyuan Daxi, which has a century-old wood industry heritage, continues to bring traditional wood crafts to the world through international competitions. Taoyuan Municipal Daxi Wood Art and Ecological Museum hosts the "3rd Daxi International Wood Furniture Craft Design Competition". This year, the theme is "seating". Applications are collected from now until February 15 next year, with a total prize of NT$1.4 million. Wood furniture creators from around the world are invited to reinterpret "sitting" with contemporary designs. They also hope to connect Daxi's local industry and global wood crafts talents through international exchanges.

Chen Qianhui, director of the Wood Museum, said that the Daxi woodware industry has developed for more than a century since the 19th century. From lumber processing, wood customization to design and creation, it has gradually formed a complete industrial chain. The international competition is not only to collect outstanding works, but also hopes to promote Daxi’s wood art technology, industrial resources and cultural characteristics to the international market, so that traditional craftsmanship and modern design can collide to create new industry possibilities.

The first two competitions were held in 2023 and 2025 respectively, attracting a total of 934 works from 20 countries and regions around the world, and 32 outstanding works were selected. Through exhibitions of winning works and touring exhibitions, an exchange platform for Taiwanese and international wood crafts creators will be gradually established. In addition to soliciting submissions, this year's event will also arrange for domestic and foreign wooden furniture creators and designers to have an in-depth understanding of Daxi regional culture, Taiwanese domestic materials and the local wood art industry, and increase opportunities for collaborative sampling, giving international creativity a chance to truly come to Daxi.

Chen Qianhui said that this year's competition focuses on "seating" and is no longer limited to the concept of traditional chairs. Stools, benches, couches, modular seats and even public seating can all participate, encouraging creators to think about the relationship between furniture and people based on physical experience, space and lifestyle. The selection will be based on innovation, practicality, technology and sustainability, with a total of 19 awards. The gold award for the social group will be worth 400,000 yuan, the youth group will be awarded 250,000 yuan, and there will be a Daxi Special Award of 150,000 yuan.

This year, in order to create more connections between international design and Taiwanese wood, we continue to cooperate with the Hsinchu Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Service of the Ministry of Agriculture. Works that pass the preliminary review and use domestic materials will be provided with domestic materials for proofing. There will also be 3 "Taiwan Domestic Materials Special Awards", each of which will be provided with 300 domestic materials. The organizer hopes to take this opportunity to promote the application of domestic materials and implement "real estate and local sales" from design, production to consumption, so that Daxi's century-old wood art can not only preserve the tradition, but also explore a new industrial path through design innovation and international exchanges.
