Anyang Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market Fruit and Vegetable Building reopens in February next year with 15 billion won invested after collapse due to heavy snow

The fruit and vegetable building of the Anyang Agricultural and Fishery Products Wholesale Market in Gyeonggi Province, whose roof collapsed due to record-breaking heavy snowfall in November 2024, will reopen in February next year after a full-scale restoration project costing 15 billion won.

Due to design changes, the completion date was delayed by about two months from the original plan, and fruit and vegetable wholesalers spent the entire Chuseok holiday in underground parking lots and temporary stores.

According to Anyang City on the 27th, the city is proceeding with the fruit and vegetable building restoration work, which began last May, with the goal of completion in February next year.

The current progress rate is about 30%, and full-scale on-site assembly will begin next month after major materials such as roof frames and frames pre-fabricated at the factory are brought in.

Initially, the city planned to complete the project by the end of this year, two years after the accident, but the schedule was postponed due to design changes that reflected merchants' demands, such as installing an additional roof on the upper part of the northern cold storage.

The restoration project cost of 15 billion won will be invested not only to restore the roof, but also to completely rebuild the internal infrastructure, including electricity, communication, and firefighting facilities that were damaged at the time of the accident, to a new level.

The newly restored fruit and vegetable building will see significant changes in spatial structure and safety.

The collapsed southern roof (5,933 ㎡) will be completely rebuilt, but the northern roof (originally 5,933 ㎡), which was demolished after safety inspection, will be roofed only in the 1,230 ㎡ area where the cold storage will be located.

The remaining 80% of the north side is left as an outdoor open space without a roof, and floor waterproofing work is currently in progress.

Accordingly, the total floor area of ​​the fruit and vegetable building will be reduced by 4,036 m2 from the existing 32,794 m2 to 28,758 m2.

Roof safety is greatly enhanced.

To compensate for the weaknesses of the existing structure, which had no pillars, nine new support pillars to support the roof were built indoors, and construction was done by covering the structure with a membrane.

Fruit and vegetable wholesalers, who have suffered inconvenience for nearly two years since the accident, are currently continuing their business in two temporary stores set up by the city in an underground parking lot and a large temporary structure (tent) installed in an above-ground parking lot.

A city official said, "The goal is to complete the project in February next year, but we will expedite the process so that merchants can move into the restored fruit and vegetable building before the Lunar New Year holiday as much as possible."

Previously, at Anyang Agricultural and Fishery Products Wholesale Market, the southern roof of the fruit and vegetable building collapsed due to a sudden heavy snowfall around noon on November 28, 2024, injuring one person and completely halting the operation of the fruit and vegetable building.
