17 people were killed and 15 others injured in a mass shooting in South Africa

(CNN) - On Sunday, police in South Africa launched a manhunt for gunmen after 17 people were killed and 15 others injured in a shooting that occurred in a town outside Johannesburg.

Police said that, on Saturday evening, local time, eight unidentified men opened fire on people who were having drinks outside the bar in Wedela on the West Rand, before entering the place and “continuing to shoot those inside.”

Officials reported that the suspected attackers were armed with pistols and AK-47 rifles.

15 people with gunshot wounds were transferred to medical facilities for treatment.

South African police previously tweeted: “It is alleged that people were having drinks inside and outside the bar when the suspects arrived and opened fire on those outside. The suspects then entered the bar and continued to shoot those inside.”

The police added that the attackers searched some of those at the scene and seized their mobile phones, before fleeing the site on board two unknown vehicles.

Police said no arrests have been made so far.

Mass shootings are not uncommon in South Africa. Last week, 11 people were killed, including a woman believed to be pregnant, when gunmen opened fire inside a house south of Durban.

In June, 12 people were killed in an informal settlement (slum) in a suburb of Johannesburg.
