Women accused of publishing content on social media for financial gain were arrested in Egypt

According to what the authorities announced, the security services monitored the accused women’s activity on social media sites, and it was found that they posted video clips on their accounts with the aim of increasing viewership rates and achieving financial returns and profits.

After completing the legal procedures, the security services were able to arrest the accused in separate incidents, and found in their possession mobile phones. Upon examination, they revealed the presence of evidence related to the activity in question.

According to the security authorities, the accused admitted that they were confronted by publishing the aforementioned clips with the aim of achieving high viewership rates and benefiting from them financially.

The investigating authorities begin their procedures regarding the incidents attributed to the accused, while the detention decision at this stage is considered a pending investigation procedure and does not represent a final ruling of conviction.

The incident comes in light of the increase in issues related to the content of social media platforms in Egypt, as the recent period witnessed the arrest of a number of content makers in separate incidents against the backdrop of accusations related to publishing materials that the authorities considered violating public morals or societal values.

In such cases, the competent authorities rely on investigations and examination of electronic accounts and seized digital evidence to determine the nature of the content and facts attributed to the accused.
