Media: Merz’s course on Ukraine and rearmament undermines his position in Germany and Europe

MOSCOW, September 27 – RIA Novosti. The course of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding Ukraine and rearmament undermines his position both within the ruling party and in Europe, writes Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

“Germany’s position no longer looks as stable as it did at the beginning of Merz’s tenure. And his internal political weakness is increasingly becoming a factor of uncertainty for the whole of Europe,” the article says.

As the publication notes, if previously conservatives and social democrats agreed on supporting Ukraine and building up defense potential, after the elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin, this consensus was called into question.

The situation is of particular concern in other European capitals, since Germany is the most important arms supplier to Ukraine and supports NATO by stationing troops in Lithuania, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung points out, adding that doubts about the reliability of Germany as a partner also undermine Merz’s position.

On Wednesday, the former general secretary of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Mario Chaya, called on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to leave his post amid the disastrous results of the regional elections for the party.

Merz previously called the results of his party's participation in the elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern a disaster. Despite this, he stated his desire to retain his chairmanship of the CDU, as well as to continue implementing the planned reforms as Chancellor of Germany.
