A misleading video purporting to show Houthi military spoils from 2018

(CNN) - Social media accounts circulated a video clip claiming to show military “spoils” harvested by Houthi fighters, in light of the recent battles with government forces in areas of western Yemen.

The circulating video received tens of thousands of views, prompted by a misleading description that said: “The new has arrived... see the spoils of the Giants’ brigades in the hands of the Yemeni armed forces.”

The clip shows damaged armored vehicles bearing the slogans and flags of the "Giants' Brigades", along with rifles propped against a stone wall, and a fighter wearing tactical gear appears nearby.

CNN Arabic's investigation revealed that the video is old, as it dates back to old battles in Taiz Governorate, and is not related to the recent confrontations between government forces and the Houthis.

By dividing the video into still clips and using reverse search, it was found that the clips had previously been distributed by the Houthi group's "war media" and republished by Yemeni media outlets on July 28, 2018.

At the time, pro-Houthi media reported that the scenes were related to "a specific operation at the Mwaza Junction and the Al-Waziyah Triangle in Taiz."

The video returned to circulation in conjunction with the return of escalation between the parties to the Yemeni crisis, as battles broke out between government forces, supported by reinforcements from the "Giants' Brigades", within sites under the control of the Houthis in the governorates of Taiz and Hodeidah.

The "Giants' Brigades" include thousands of fighters, and were formed to support coalition operations in Yemen against the Houthis since the outbreak of the crisis in Yemen in 2015.
