The Taiwan Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Society recently held the "2026 National Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Academic Symposium" at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, attracting more than 200 industry, academic and research representatives. The industry also proposed the application of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) for on-site power generation in AI data centers, as well as the development of hydrogen energy ships, fuel cell trucks and other technologies.
The seminar was hosted by the Taiwan Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Society and hosted by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. It was held at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology from October 2 to 3 and included more than 150 papers. This year, a hydrogen energy and fuel cell technology forum will be held simultaneously to discuss hydrogen energy policy, manufacturing processes, certification and practical applications.

The first-day technical forum invited 11 experts from Taiwan Economic Research Institute, Industrial Research Institute, Delta Electronics, Metal Center, Polyma, Taiwan Rheinland TÜV, Lianhua Linde, CNPC Green Energy Institute and Hydrogen Power to discuss domestic and foreign hydrogen energy policies and global low-cost Starting from the hydrocarbon market, we will discuss ammonia hydrogen production, blue hydrogen production processes, international certification of green hydrogen and low-carbon hydrogen, hydrogen refueling station layout, etc., and focus on the application of SOFC to on-site power generation in AI data centers, as well as terminal applications such as hydrogen ships and fuel cell trucks.
On the second day of the conference, lectures were given by Ding Zhiming, a lecturer at National Cheng Kung University, Dr. Hermann Tempel from the Jülich Research Center in Germany, and Guan Yande, a tenured distinguished professor at Qinyi University of Science and Technology and dean of the School of Engineering. They shared their views on anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE), the opportunities and challenges of water electrolysis in energy transformation, and the integration of fuel cell systems and AI.
Taking Germany as an example, Tempel pointed out that in 2025, there will be more than 1,000 hours of negative electricity prices due to excess renewable energy, but the number of hours of high electricity prices will exceed 3,000 hours at the same time, highlighting the importance of dynamic operation and durability of electrolyzers. It also echoes Taiwan's need to develop flexible electrolytic hydrogen production in the face of intermittent renewable energy.
President Yan Jiayu of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology said that the school has long-term investment in green energy materials and engineering application technology research, and hopes to promote industry-university cooperation through special speeches, technical forums and paper publications, so that research results can be actually transformed into contributions to the country.
Wang Chenghao, chairman of the conference and director of the Department of Materials at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, said that hydrogen energy is an indispensable strategic puzzle for Taiwan to move towards net-zero. National Taiwan University of Science and Technology has long invested in the research of catalyst materials, electrolyzers and energy storage systems, and hopes to connect basic research and practical industrial applications through close dialogue between industry and academia.
