The report pointed out that at present, the development of inland river cruise ships in China has initially formed a spatial pattern led by the Yangtze River and Pearl River trunk lines. The Yangtze River Main Line and the Pearl River Main Line are at the forefront of the development of inland river cruise ships in China in terms of transport capacity and reception scale. Data show that as of August this year, a total of 47 inter-provincial cruise ships were put into operation on the Yangtze River trunk line, with a total number of passengers of 21,351. The Pearl River cruise ship capacity reaches 39 ships with 10,690 passengers, ranking second in the country.
According to the report, 2026 will be the year with the highest density of new inter-provincial cruise ship capacity since 2014. Five inter-provincial cruise ships were added throughout the year, all of which are 150-meter-class, 650-passenger large luxury cruise ships. At present, different product types have been formed, such as sightseeing cruises, leisure vacation cruises, and "sightseeing + leisure" composite cruises.
The report pointed out that the silver-haired group has become the main consumer of China's inland river cruises; the young and middle-aged market has great growth potential; at the same time, overseas tourists are growing rapidly and constitute an important part of the inland river cruise market. Data show that in 2025, Yangtze River cruise ships will receive 117,600 overseas tourists, a year-on-year increase of 56.8%, and the proportion of overseas tourists in the overall passenger volume will increase from 1.5% in 2023 to 9.8%. Pearl River tourism also shows rapid growth in the inbound market.
Currently, provinces and cities along the Yangtze River are strengthening route connections and regional cooperation to promote the coordinated development of cruise tourism from a single route and a single city to a city cluster along the river.
In recent years, Hubei has introduced a series of policies and measures to promote the high-quality development of Yangtze River cruise tourism. At present, a series of cruise brands have been formed, expanding from traditional water sightseeing to riverside night cruises, short-distance leisure, multi-day vacations, cultural performances and other types of products.
Data show that in the first seven months of this year, the average passenger occupancy rate of inter-provincial cruise ships on the Yangtze River was 79.5%, which was at a high level for the same period in history. In the first half of this year, Hubei interprovincial cruise ships received 78,800 overseas tourists, a year-on-year increase of 62.47%.
