Typhoon No. 25 approaches Kanto, affecting landslides and transportation

On the afternoon of the 21st, large and strong Typhoon No. 25 passed northeast over the North Sea off Hachijo Island in the Izu Islands and approached the Boso Peninsula. Heavy rain and strong winds hit the Izu Islands and southern Kanto region, and landslides occurred one after another in Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures. No. 25 is expected to move away from the eastern seaboard of the Kanto region after dawn on the 22nd.

In Yokosuka City and Miura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, earth and sand poured into private houses and apartments on the afternoon of the 21st. The two residents, a woman in her 60s and a woman in her 20s, could not be contacted, and prefectural police and fire departments are searching for them. In Sodegaura City, Chiba Prefecture, a man in his 50s who was working to remove collapsed earth and sand fell down a cliff along with heavy equipment, and was taken to a hospital where his condition was said to be unconscious.

At 12:40 p.m. on the same day, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a special landslide warning at alert level 5 for Oshima Town (Izu Oshima) in Tokyo. In addition to the town, an emergency safety order was issued in Ichihara City, Kimitsu City, Sodegaura City, Sammu City, and Otaki Town in Chiba Prefecture.

This is the second time this year that a special landslide warning was issued in Oshima Town from the 7th to the 8th due to the front. The town received 832 millimeters of rainfall in the 48 hours up to 8 p.m. on the 21st, breaking the historical record for this location. Takuya Hosomi, head of the agency's forecast division, said at a press conference, ``There is an extremely high possibility that some kind of disaster has already occurred in landslide-prone areas.''

Many flights to and from Haneda and Narita airports have been canceled due to wind and rain. In Chiba Prefecture, JR has canceled operations on some sections of the Sobu Line, Uchibo Line, and Sotobo Line, and some sections of the Ken-O Expressway and Higashi-Kanto Expressway have been closed to traffic.

At 8 p.m., No. 25 headed northeast at 40 kilometers per hour over the ocean about 120 kilometers south-southeast of Choshi City in the prefecture. The central pressure was 960 hectopascals, the maximum wind speed was 40 m/s, and the maximum instantaneous wind speed was 55 m/s. The area within a radius of 185 kilometers is an area with strong winds of 25 m/s or more, and the area within 650 km to the east and 440 km to the west is an area of ​​strong winds with winds of 15 m/s or more.
