The blood clotting mechanism has evolved to quickly stop bleeding during injuries, but in the conditions of a modern sedentary lifestyle it can lead to thrombosis.
A serious risk of thrombosis occurs when sitting for a long time, and this is especially true for e-sportsmen, said Dmitry Berezovsky, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Fundamental Medical Disciplines of the Faculty of Medicine. He gave a comment to Lenta.ru.
The expert said that in the distant past, when survival often depended on the ability to quickly stop bleeding from injuries, a powerful clotting mechanism gave a person an advantage. But it is precisely this feature, combined with a modern lifestyle, that can become dangerous, he added. The doctor explained that when a person does not move for a long time, the vessels are compressed, the blood flow in the veins slows down, and this creates conditions for the formation of blood clots.
“A similar situation arises with the so-called “traveler’s thrombosis”: if a person sits motionless for several hours, for example, 7-8 hours during an air flight, there is a high risk of thrombosis of the lower extremities. The danger is that the resulting blood clot can break off, enter the heart, and then into the vessels of the pulmonary circulation. This can lead to serious consequences, including death,” explained Berezovsky.
According to him, such cases occurred not only among travelers, but also among military personnel, believers of certain faiths, who were forced to maintain a motionless posture for a long time.
