Nepal is considering a ban on Everest climbs for climbers without experience

Climbers without high-altitude climbing experience may be prohibited from climbing Everest.

Nepalese MPs are debating how many preliminary ascents must be made to obtain permission to climb Everest.

Government rates for climbing Everest via the classic route for foreign climbers have changed: the cost is now $15,000 in the spring season, $7,500 in the fall season and $3,750 in the winter and summer seasons.

MOSCOW, September 15 - RIA Novosti. They want to prohibit climbers who do not have experience in high-altitude ascents from climbing Everest; the details of this bill are still under development, Secretary General of the Nepalese Mountaineering Association Rajendra Lama told RIA Novosti.

"One of the most significant changes is the requirement for prior high-altitude climbing experience for those planning to climb Everest. The purpose of this measure is to ensure that climbers have sufficient experience at altitude before taking on the highest and most technically challenging commercial expedition in the world," the source said.

The new law is still at the drafting stage: Nepalese deputies are discussing how many preliminary ascents to peaks above 7 thousand and 8 thousand meters will need to be made in order to obtain permission.

According to the mountaineering publication Explorersweb, it is unlikely that the new rules will come into force in time for the 2027 spring season.

The association also strongly recommended that climbers take out comprehensive insurance covering high altitude ascents, emergency helicopter evacuation and, if necessary, repatriation costs.

State rates for climbing the highest peak in the world have also changed this year.

“For foreign climbers climbing the classic route, the cost is now $15,000 in the spring season (March-May); $7,500 in the autumn season (September-November); $3,750 in the winter and summer seasons,” Lama said.
