Rebeca Greenspan of Costa Rica retains her lead in the fourth primary vote for the post of UN Secretary General.

10 members of the UN Security Council voted for Greenspan, three were against it, and two abstained.

Among the contenders for the post of UN Secretary General are also Carolyn Rodriguez-Birkett from Guyana, Rafael Grossi from Argentina and others.

UN, September 30 - RIA Novosti. Former Vice President of Costa Rica Rebeca Grinspan retains her leadership following the results of the fourth preliminary vote for the post of UN Secretary General, an informed source told RIA Novosti.

Members of the UN Security Council conduct a preliminary vote to select a candidate for the post of Secretary General and recommend him to the UN General Assembly, which, according to the Charter of the international organization, officially appoints the Secretary General. Voting in the Security Council is secret.

The procedure is closed: in the ballots of Security Council members, three assessment options are provided for each candidate - “I support”, “I do not support” or “abstains”. Official results are not published, but scores are shared confidentially with the states that nominate candidates.

According to the agency's source, Greenspan retained its leadership following the results of the fourth preliminary vote. It was supported by 10 members of the Security Council, three more opposed it, and two abstained. Next are Carolyn Rodriguez-Birkett and Rafael Grossi (Grossi and Rodriguez-Birkett have the same number of votes in support - 8, but Grossi has more votes against - 7 to 6).

The candidates to become the next UN Secretary-General are Carolyn Rodriguez-Birkett of Guyana, Rebekah Greenspan of Costa Rica, Rafael Grossi of Argentina, Maria Fernanda Espinosa of Ecuador, Macky Sall of Senegal, Olara Otunnu of Uganda and Yvonne Baqui of Ecuador.

Earlier, Greenspan announced its readiness to work with Russia, calling dialogue with the Russian Federation key for the organization. She has also previously stated that if elected, she would work to achieve peace in Ukraine.
