Du Mu, a poet in the late Tang Dynasty, made the name of Tongque Terrace spread through the ages with his sentence "Tongque spring locks two Qiaos deeply". Many people may not know that the Tongque Terrace, which is repeatedly sung in the poem, is located in the Yecheng National Archaeological Site Park in Linzhang County today.
The smoke and clouds of history once overlapped in Yecheng. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Huan of Qi began to build Ye City; during the Jian'an Period, Cao Cao re-planned and built Yebei City on the old foundation, which was later used as the capital of the Wei Kingdom; Gao Huan, the powerful minister of the Eastern Wei Dynasty, later built Yenan City directly south of Yebei City.
Cao Cao built three towers, namely Tongque, Jinfeng and Bingjing, on the northwest wall of Yebei City. Tongque Tower is a towering fortress, a military observation fortress, and a place where literati at that time gathered for banquets and gatherings.
Where is the ancient Tongque Tower that countless tourists miss?
To the northwest of Yecheng ruins, Tongque Santai ruins park is located here. Stepping into the garden, the rammed earth platform is particularly thick under the clear autumn sky. On the square, the statue of Cao Cao stands quietly. Visitors climb the stairs to the remaining Jinfeng Terrace and gaze into the distance, with the North China Plain spreading into the distance.
"The Cao family and his sons recruited talents from all over the world, and the Seven Sons of Jian'an and other literati gathered here. People often climbed up to the high platform, feasted and gathered, expressed their feelings through the scenery, and wrote poems over the wine. The generous and sad Jian'an style emerged from this high platform," said Yue Jinlong, the person in charge of Tongque Santai Heritage Park.
Time passes. Over thousands of years, the ancient Zhang River changed its course several times, eroding the foundations of Santai. "Today, all Bingjing Platform has been washed away; only the southeastern corner of Tongque Terrace is left, about 5 meters high; the best preserved one is Jinfeng Terrace, which is 12 meters high, 120 meters long from north to south, and 71 meters wide from east to west." said Shen Lihua, associate researcher at the Institute of Archeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and head of the Yecheng archaeological team.
In 1983, the Yecheng Archaeological Team was jointly established by the Institute of Archeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Hebei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics. Afterwards, through comprehensive exploration and key excavations, the rammed earth foundation and distribution range of the Tongque Terrace were ascertained. The location of the Tongque Terrace recorded in historical books was thus confirmed.
Walking through Yecheng, you will see several cultural landmarks like scattered pearls and jade, which reveal the mystery of the ancient capital.邺城博物馆内，400余件(组)馆藏文物，完整串联起邺城不同时期历史与文化；邺城考古博物馆，国内首座佛造像专题博物馆，集中展出北朝佛教造像，呈现邺城鼎盛时期的佛教文化；建安文学馆，则以图文史料、情景雕塑，回溯三曹与建安七子的诗文华章，带领游人走进邺下文人的精神世界。
Yecheng's capital layout of "a single palace city in the north and symmetrically distributed along the central axis" had a profound influence on later generations. Yecheng has also been recognized as "a model of ancient Chinese capital construction" by the Chinese Ancient Capital Society.
However, thousands of years of wind and rain have washed away the city. Except for a few remnants such as Santai, most of Yecheng has been buried under the loess. How can tourists who come from thousands of miles away get a glimpse of the past style of this majestic capital?

The large-scale indoor live performance "The Long Song of Yedu" takes the audience to relive the history of Cao Cao's defeat of Yuan Shao and the chanting of Jian'an literati. Visitors can read the cultural context of Yedu and feel the pulse of history through 360-degree rotating seats, naked-eye 3D, and holographic projection.
A song from Yedu echoes through the ages. Even though the beacon fires have dissipated and the old city has become a thing of the past, the Jian'an style and capital model carried by Ye City have not gone far. Thousands of years have passed, and this rich culture has become more fragrant with time. Every time I look back, it is a drink with history, and I am drunk in the speechless vastness.
