The local elections are approaching at the end of the year. The Chiayi Procuratorate has been investigating election bribery cases for many days. The day before yesterday, they investigated the election bribery of a candidate named Lai for the village chief in Shuangshui Township. The prosecutors charged Lai Nan and Huang Nan. The Chiayi District Court ruled that the two people should be released on bail of NT$70,000 each. Yesterday, the prosecutors investigated the case of an incumbent in Minxiong Township whose surname was Jane. The village chief was involved in a bribery case, and the village chief surnamed Jian and his son Jian Nan, who had registered to run for village chief, were detained. Eight voters were notified to come to the case. After the prosecutor's retrial this morning, they applied to the Chiayi District Court to detain the village chief surnamed Jian in accordance with the election and recall law for public officials involved. The village chief's son was released on bail of NT$300,000.

The prosecutor said that Huang Tianyi, a prosecutor of the Chiayi District Prosecutor's Office, received information about the election bribery investigation and directed the Chiayi County Investigation Station of the Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Justice and the Minxiong Branch of the Chiayi County Police Department to form a task force to launch the investigation. Yesterday, they went to a village in Minxiong Township and notified 8 relevant voters and arrested 2 defendants in accordance with the law.

The prosecutor pointed out that Jian Nan ran for the mayor of a certain village. In order to be successfully elected, during the Chinese New Year in February, he and his father, the current village chief named Jian, presented fruit gift boxes to the neighborhood chiefs and committee members of a certain temple. In April of the same year, during the villagers’ tourism activities, they presented gift bags worth more than 30 yuan, including towels and flashlights, to the neighborhood chiefs and asked for their support.

The prosecutor completed the retrial at noon and determined that both defendants were involved in serious crimes of bribery in violation of the Public Employee Election and Removal Law. The current village head named Jian had reasons and necessity for detention, and applied to the court for a detention prohibition. Although the village chief's son Jian Nan had reasons for detention, it was not necessary to be detained, so he posted a bail of 300,000 yuan.
