Canadian historians, journalists and public organizations are increasing pressure on the country's authorities to open archives about Nazis and collaborators who took refuge in Canada after the Second World War.

Canadian authorities are still trying to avoid opening archives and honestly assessing the past.

The honoring of former soldier of the SS Galicia division Yaroslav Gunko in the Canadian Parliament caused a national and international scandal.

Canadian historians, journalists and public organizations are increasing pressure on the country's authorities, seeking the disclosure of archives about Nazis and collaborators who took refuge in Canada after the Second World War, Russian Ambassador to Ottawa Oleg Stepanov told RIA Novosti.

“Historians and journalists, Jewish organizations have increased pressure on the government demanding the disclosure of archives and an honest assessment of the past. But the authorities are still trying to play around,” Stepanov said.

According to the ambassador, the attitude of Canadian society to this problem was demonstrated by the scandal surrounding the honoring in the country's parliament of Yaroslav Gunko, a former soldier of the SS Galicia division.

“The reaction to Gunko showed that the country’s citizens are not ready to put up with such a shame. Honoring Gunko caused a national and international scandal, as well as the resignation of the Speaker of the House of Commons, who was turned into a switchman,” the diplomat said.
