Floods, landslides, and avalanches occurred in succession due to heavy rain in northern India and Nepal during the monsoon season, leaving at least 80 people dead or missing.

According to AFP on the 27th (local time), disaster relief authorities in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh said, "At least 56 people have died over the three days from the 25th due to unusually heavy rains that hit most areas of the state."

During this period, 66.5 mm of rain fell in the area, which is nine times the average rainfall (7.6 mm) at this time of year. Authorities explained that a low pressure that developed in the eastern Bay of Bengal moved inland and caused heavy rain, causing flooding and other damage to about 1,000 houses.

India's Central Water Resources Commission also warned that "the situation is very serious," saying that major rivers in the north, including the Ganges and Gandak rivers that pass through Uttar Pradesh, and the Kosi and Bagmati rivers, which are tributaries of the Ganges, have exceeded the danger level.

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India with a population of 240 million, suffers severe floods every year during the rainy season from June to September.

In Nepal, which borders Uttar Pradesh, flooding and landslides have continued since the 24th, and at least 14 people have lost their lives, Reuters reported.

According to the Kathmandu Post, a local media outlet, a 75-year-old man died and his two teenage daughters (17 and 15 years old) went missing when silt flowing down from heavy rain hit a house in the Palpa area of ​​Lumbini Province, southern Nepal, this morning. In the Baglung region of northern Gandaki Province, four people, including women and children, were found dead when a house was buried by a landslide.

Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Agency issued a flash flood warning to 49 out of 77 regions, saying that water levels in major rivers and streams across the country are continuing to rise.

However, he added that the Rasuwa and Nuwakot areas in the north-central Bagmati Province, which suffered great damage with over 7,500 deaths or disappearances last month, were excluded from this calculation of high-risk areas.

Meanwhile, the Kathmandu Post reported that at least 14 Nepalese employees went missing after an avalanche struck the Himlung Himal base camp, a 7,126m high peak in Gandaki Province, this morning.

The climbing agency 'Himalayan Holiday Trekking' announced that it had completely lost contact with 14 employees, including Sherpas, who were setting up tents for foreign climbers after the avalanche.

Local authorities are currently unable to launch a rescue helicopter due to bad weather, and even land access is blocked, making rescue operations difficult.
