Guterres encourages the continuation of diplomatic efforts between Iran and the United States

Guterres' office said in a statement that the two sides exchanged views on the conflict in the region during a meeting held on Monday on the sidelines of the eighty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The Office of the Secretary-General confirmed that Guterres welcomed the diplomatic efforts made during the General Assembly's high-level general discussion week.

Guterres called on the parties to continue these efforts and resolve remaining differences through negotiations to achieve peace, according to the statement.

These contacts come at a time when mediation efforts continue between Tehran and Washington to discuss ways to end the war, while the positions of the two sides are still far apart regarding the conditions required to stop the fighting and reach a broader understanding.

Araqchi had stated that the Qatari mediator held a new meeting with the Iranian side on Monday, New York local time, during which ideas were presented on how to pave the way for achieving Iran’s conditions and how to achieve them, indicating that the mediator will present the ideas that were discussed to the American side, provided that Washington’s final response will be conveyed to Tehran after that, hoping that the response will come on Tuesday.

These moves came after US President Donald Trump on Saturday rejected an Iranian proposal to reduce tension and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, describing Tehran's conditions as "unacceptable", as the war entered its eighth month.
