Start of production of the Russian submarine "Maloyaroslavets" of project 677-LADA

Production of the diesel-electric submarine of Project 677-LADA, "Maloyaroslavets", has begun in St. Petersburg.

The Lada submarine is Russia's newest non-nuclear combat ship, being built for the Russian Navy, and the fleet it will transition to has not yet been officially announced. But, at the same time, it is known that several ships of this project are intended for the Northern Fleet, where the replenishment of non-nuclear submarine forces has begun.

For the Northern Fleet, non-nuclear submarines are primarily an anti-submarine warfare tool. Its mission may be to search for and escort foreign submarines, counter anti-submarine surface ships, reconnaissance and support Russian naval forces.

The North Atlantic remains one of the potential theaters of Russian non-nuclear submarine operations. If the tasks are distributed and defined appropriately, it can participate in the anti-submarine warfare in the area of ​​​​the so-called GIUK Line - between Greenland, Iceland and Britain.

The importance of modernizing Russia's non-nuclear submarine forces is also related to the development of similar capabilities by NATO countries. Germany, Norway, and Canada participate in the Project 212CD submarine building program. It is expected to create a large series of these devices. The new NATO ships will have improved detection and stealth capabilities, which will increase demand on Russian anti-submarine forces in the North Atlantic and adjacent seas.

In this case, the appearance of Lada submarines in northern latitudes will be useful to adequately respond to the forces of any potential aggressor.
