The director of the Altai Nature Reserve warned about an increase in the number of connecting rod bears in winter

The number of crank bears may increase this winter. Director of the Altai Biosphere Reserve Igor Kalmykov admitted this prospect in a conversation with the TASS agency.

The expert fears that there will be more connecting rod bears against the backdrop of systemic long-term problems in the hunting industry. Previously, according to Kalmykov, the lands were assigned to specific hunters and commercial hunters, and the taiga was also under control. Now, due to a long lack of regulation, bears are increasingly coming out to people and teaching their offspring to this method of survival. As a result, a population of “arrogant and daring” bears has emerged that are not afraid of humans, Kalmykov said.

Failure of the food supply also poses a threat. In particular, we are talking about pine nuts and wild plants, without which bears increasingly rush to populated areas, where they find easier prey - carrion in gardens and domestic animals. As Kalmykov is convinced, it is impossible to solve the problem without harvesting pine nuts and simplifying the procedure for forced shooting. “We need a clear process and a red line here. This should be monitoring and managing the population,” concluded the agency’s interlocutor.
