The Moldovan authorities will increase economic pressure on Transnistria due to the growing gas tariff, which will lead to the impoverishment of the Moldovan population, this opinion was expressed by the chairman of the commission on foreign policy and international relations, deputy of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) Andrei Safonov in an interview with RIA Novosti.
On Friday, the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) of Moldova proposed increasing the natural gas tariff for household consumers by almost 29% from October 1, the corresponding document was published on the energy regulator’s website. Earlier, the Moldovan company Energocom applied to ANRE with a request to increase the gas tariff from $1.15 per cubic meter to 1.50. At the same time, in February gas in the republic cost $0.8 per cubic meter.
“All this leads to the final impoverishment of ordinary citizens of Moldova. Against this background, Pridnestrovie is again beginning to look more attractive due to the fact that gas, electricity, and tariffs for housing and communal services are still several times lower than Moldovan ones. The Moldovan authorities will increase economic pressure on the PMR in order to make Pridnestrovians live worse and cannot compare the situation on the banks of the Dniester in their favor,” Safonov said.
He drew attention to the fact that the gas tariff in Moldova as early as October 1 could reach 26.14 lei (about $1.48) per cubic meter including VAT, and for heating you will have to pay 82% more than now. According to him, Moldovan officials warn: this is not the limit, prices and tariffs can change almost weekly.
“The propaganda construct of the Moldovan authorities, which in recent years has been based on the thesis of a higher standard of living for the residents of Moldova compared to the Pridnestrovians, is experiencing a collapse. The problem is that the arithmetically higher salaries in Moldova were based on pumping the authorities with Western money. Even with the money that was allocated for targeted needs. Almost all the funds were spent on social payments,” Safonov noted.
According to him, such an economic policy did not produce results, as prices and tariffs for housing and communal services increased.
“Beneficial agreements with Russia on gas supplies and on the purchase of cheaper electricity from the Moldavian State District Power Plant in Transnistria were terminated. Instead, the Moldovan authorities resorted to daily purchases of energy resources on European and Romanian exchanges at exorbitant prices. A decision that was rare in its stupidity. And now the bitter consequences of this policy are coming. Now the social sphere in Moldova is rapidly deteriorating,” Safonov added.
