DOSB decides on German Olympic applicants for 2036, 2040 or 2044

The race between Munich and Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr for the role of the German Olympic candidate for 2036, 2040 or 2044 has been decided. The result of the secret vote at the extraordinary general meeting of the German Olympic Sports Confederation in Baden-Baden will not be announced until 1:45 p.m. as part of an ARD broadcast. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is supposed to reveal whether the candidacy from Bavaria or North Rhine-Westphalia will be reported to the International Olympic Committee for further proceedings.

The 42 leading Olympic associations, each with three votes, as well as the personal members and the presidium members of the DOSB were entitled to vote in the vote in the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden. There were 141 votes up for grabs. The decision was made in the first round of voting. Before the election, there were many indications that there would be a close race between the two remaining candidates.

Hamburg's project had already failed in a referendum in the Hanseatic city at the end of May. Berlin withdrew its application two days before the DOSB decision after the Olympic supporters in the Red City Hall were voted out in the House of Representatives election on Sunday.

“The route was typically German”

DOSB President Thomas Weikert praised the multi-year process of selecting the national applicant for the Olympics and Paralympics as modern, transparent and promising. “Some might say the path was typically German,” added Weikert. After seven failed Olympic projects for the winter and summer games, the current process “heals the application wounds of the past and resolves doubts”.

The new Minister of State for Sports Ronald Rauhe campaigned for an application that could inspire people. “Perhaps that’s exactly what Germany could use right now: a big common goal. If we believe in something together, then we can achieve something together,” said the Olympic canoe champion.
