DOSB restricts eligible voters when deciding on Germany's Olympic bid

At the extraordinary general meeting of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) on Saturday in the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden, the number of people eligible to vote is severely limited. According to paragraph 16 of the DOSB statutes, among the 103 member organizations of the DOSB, only the leading Olympic associations are allowed to decide between Munich and Rhine-Ruhr with Cologne as the German candidate for the Summer Games. In addition, the members of the Presidium (ten) and the Personal Members of the DOSB (eight) are allowed to vote.

Each of the 42 Olympic professional associations (including winter sports) has three votes, whether it is the German Football Association (DFB) with 8.2 million members or the Snowboard Association of Germany (36,000). The package of votes may not be distributed. If all eligible voters came and voted according to the rules, 144 votes would be awarded. This probably won't happen as former national player Leon Goretzka has already canceled.

Disabled sports association is not allowed to vote

Excluded from the election are, among others, the state sports associations, although they make a significant contribution to top-class sport, as well as the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS). Criticism of this is limited, even among those affected. The DOSB would have had to change its statutes to do this. Members of the DBS point to their inclusion in some Olympic professional associations. The DBS was involved in the assessment of the candidates.

After the withdrawal from Berlin on Thursday, there will only be one round of voting. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is scheduled to announce the result between 1:45 p.m. and 2:45 p.m., which will be broadcast by ARD. Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) and his colleague in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hendrik Wüst (CDU), travel to Baden-Baden.

The winner will be registered by the DOSB with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a German candidate. In 2029, the IOC reportedly wants to decide who will host the 2036 Games. It is now no longer out of the question that Europe could be an option. Otherwise the Germans would apply for 2040 or 2044. If the German candidate failed the IOC selection process in 2028 or failed in 2036, the campaign would be over. The last seven attempts failed. Germany last hosted the Summer Games in Munich in 1972.
