(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Choi Pyeong-cheon and Oh Gyu-jin = The confirmation hearing progress report for Justice Minister candidate Kim Seung-won was adopted by the Democratic Party of Korea at the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly on the 17th.

The Legislative and Judiciary Committee held a general meeting on this day and decided on a personnel hearing progress report. The People Power Party opposed the adoption and left the meeting 12 minutes after it began.

The report was adopted two days after the confirmation hearing for candidate Kim ended on the 15th.

The Democratic Party believes that Candidate Kim's suspicions of soliciting approval for clinical trials for COVID-19 treatments and suspicions of preferential treatment for social cooperatives for spouses were clarified at the hearing, but the People Power Party's position is that the suspicions have not been clarified.

Rep. Park Hyeong-soo, secretary of the People Power Party's Legislative and Judiciary Committee, criticized in his remarks before leaving the proceedings, saying, "The presentation of the agenda for adopting the report proves that the hearings so far have been a formality. Not a single suspicion has been resolved in the hearings."

Rep. Yoon Sang-hyun of the People Power Party said, "Why did the Yoon Seok-yeol government fail? They said, 'Yoon's sentiment is the party's sentiment, and the party's sentiment is the people's sentiment.'

Rep. Kwak Gyu-taek left the conference hall with the People Power Party members, protesting, “Since the (presidential) press conference is scheduled for tomorrow, shouldn’t we hold it today?”

In response, Rep. Kim Eui-gyeom, secretary-general of the ruling party, said, "As everyone who watched the hearing knows, the difference in opinions between the People Power Party and the Democratic Party is so large that it is not easy to compromise," and added, "I think the people will understand."

Judiciary Committee Chairman Seo Young-kyo, a member of the Democratic Party, countered, saying, "The personnel hearing law states that the report must be adopted within three days from the date of the hearing," and added, "They are trying to get involved with the President's Office again."

Meanwhile, follow-up bills to prosecution reform, including the Elderly Welfare Act, the Child Welfare Act, the Act on Special Punishment for Sexual Violence Crimes, and the Amendment to the Act on Sexual Protection of Children and Adolescents, were also passed through the Legislative and Judiciary Committee under the leadership of the ruling party.

The amendment mandates the so-called 'transfer of all cases', which requires judicial police officers to quickly investigate and forward the case to the prosecutor in cases of crimes of abuse of the elderly or the disabled, sexual violence, and sexual crimes against children and adolescents.

In accordance with the revision of the Criminal Procedure Act, it is a 'check device' that establishes a review procedure at the prosecution stage in situations where a judicial police officer can decide not to forward the case.
