Munich, Germany selected as candidate city to host Summer Olympics

Aiming to host the Summer Olympics in 2036, 2040, or 2044

(Brussels = Yonhap News) Correspondent Hyun Yun-kyung = Munich, the largest city in southern Germany, has been selected as the German city to host the Summer Olympics.

According to dpa news agency, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced on the 26th (local time) that Munich was selected as a candidate site to host the 2036, 2040, and 2044 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, beating Cologne and the Rhine-Ruhr region as a result of a vote by the German Olympic Committee (DOSB).

Before announcing the results in Baden-Baden, southwestern Germany, President Steinmeier said, "The Olympics are a tremendous opportunity for all of Germany," and emphasized, "Let's show that we are the land of opportunity."

Munich, which tried to host the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics, was defeated by Pyeongchang and Beijing in succession, and then tried again to host the Summer Olympics, competing with Cologne, Rhine-Ruhr, Berlin, and Hamburg for the position as a host city in Germany.

As Hamburg withdrew from the bid competition last May, and Berlin also withdrew its bid on the 24th, DOSB ultimately voted only two cities: Munich, Cologne, and Rhine-Ruhr.

Meanwhile, the last Olympics held in Germany was the 1972 Munich Olympics.
