Hurricane Polo returns to Category 5 off the coast of Mexico

Hurricane Polo has regained strength, intensifying again to Category 5 — the maximum level on the Saffir-Simpson scale — off the Mexican Pacific coast.

The National Meteorological Service (Smn) reports this in its latest bulletin, specifying that the cyclone is currently located 610 km south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas with sustained winds of 260 kilometers per hour, and gusts of up to 315 kmh, moving eastwards at a speed of 19 kmh.

Maintaining the current trajectory, states the Smn, the impact of the hurricane on the coasts of Baja California Sur is expected to occur by Monday and, in addition to the danger of strong storm surges, the risk of landslides and flooding in inland areas is also hypothesized due to the heavy rainfall that accompanies the exceptional meteorological phenomenon.

In this context, the Civil Protection and the National Guard report having activated preventive emergency plans in the affected areas with the dispatch of support units, vehicles and specialized equipment that could be used in the areas where damage is reported.
