Maricarmen, evicted in Madrid, asks for support for the demonstration for housing

Renting is no longer an option for a part of the population. In addition to being dramatic, the fact is paradoxical because for years governments and experts defended the need to promote renting over purchasing. "The economic, social and labor advantages that renting offers are innumerable. Among others, it facilitates the choice of housing for citizens, adapting it to the different needs of the life cycle, promotes the increase in the geographical mobility of workers, allows reducing household debt and offers greater flexibility in the face of changes in the income of the family unit." With this text began the preamble of the Law on measures to promote and streamline the rental process and the energy efficiency of buildings, published in 2009. During the second Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (PSOE), this rule was approved expressly designed to promote leasing, which then barely accounted for 11% of the residential market, compared to a European average that the law itself placed at around 40%.

Maricarmen, the 87-year-old woman who was evicted from her home in Madrid this week, has asked from the hospital that people attend the demonstration called this afternoon in Madrid to protest the housing crisis and evictions. In a video broadcast from the account of

“I want it to help people fight to change the laws that have allowed my eviction” and, therefore, “this Tuesday the Maricarmen decree must be approved to take a first step to end this nonsense,” he added. Maricarmen has also asked the people who support her to sign the online petition in favor of this change and also to attend the demonstration that will take place this afternoon at Puerta del Sol in Madrid. “If we all unite, we will be able to obtain indefinite contracts. We will be able to achieve what we propose. That is what I expect from you,” Maricarmen concluded.
