Demonstration in Madrid against the eviction of Maricarmen, 87 years old

Shouting "Not one more Maricarmen", this afternoon a demonstration, called by the Tenants' Union, will be held in the streets of Madrid as a show of support for Maricarmen, an 87-year-old woman evicted from the house in which she has been residing for seven decades.

This rally - starting at Puerta del Sol and ending in front of the Congress of Deputies - will be the second to be held in less than a week for this reason, after, last Wednesday, more than 10,000 people, according to the Government Delegation, gathered in front of the controversial penthouse in Chamberí purchased by the Government of the Community of Madrid as a gesture of protest against the eviction of the octogenarian. Five vans and a police car, two ambulances and a Samur vehicle already protect the entrance to Puerta del Sol, headquarters of the Madrid Government.

At 6:00 p.m., half an hour after the march begins, the balloons, vests, and orange t-shirts worn by the members of the aforementioned union begin to stand out, and they are already organizing in small groups who will carry each of the multiple posters that they have brought prepared from home.

Juan Aguilar (40 years old) bets on the Sol metro tickets with three friends. In his opinion, "housing is the biggest problem there is and public authorities should invest in it" because "business should not be done" with it. Both he and his friends agree that Maricarmen's case "has been the straw that breaks the camel's back."

Maricarmen Abascal herself asked from the hospital this Saturday, as reported by EFE, that the people who support her come to the demonstration this afternoon. "If we all unite we can get indefinite contracts, we can get what we propose. That's what I expect from you, thank you very much," she says in the video broadcast on X by the Tenants' Union.

She also wanted to leave a message to the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and asked him that next Tuesday the Council of Ministers approve a decree law that represents "the first step to put an end to the system" that allowed the launch to be carried out that forced her to leave the apartment in which she had lived for 71 years.

"I want what happened to me to help prevent it from happening to other people, I want it to help people fight and to change the laws that allowed my eviction," Maricarmen stated.
