Dobrindt calls for fast-track procedures for deportations in exceptional situations

At the so-called Munich Migration Meeting, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) advocated a rapid procedure for deportations in exceptional situations. “A new European migration crisis mechanism is needed,” said Dobrindt at the start of the meeting of 18 European interior ministers and the EU migration commissioner Magnus Brunner in Munich.

Because exceptional situations like those in Ceuta have repeatedly occurred at the EU's external borders, said Dobrindt. “These waves are not caused by a humanitarian emergency, but are driven by misinformation,” said the CSU minister. The aim is therefore to have “a rapid procedure for returns because an exceptional situation has been identified that has nothing to do with a humanitarian emergency.”

According to Dobrindt, the European border protection agency Frontex should also help countries in such situations. He spoke out in favor of a “further development” of Frontex, for example through an expanded mandate for the agency. This is “urgently necessary,” said Dobrindt.
