Roskoshestvo explained that the phrase “we will call you back” after an interview does not always mean a refusal

The promise to call back after an interview is often perceived ambiguously by candidates, but in reality there is often nothing negative hidden behind it, said Irina Shulzhenko, director of the Department of Organizational Development of Roskachestvo. In a conversation with Lenta.ru, the specialist explained what this wording actually means.

“After an interview, the phrase “we’ll call you back” can sound quite alarming to a candidate. Especially if the meeting went well, and the person is already starting to think in his head that this is the place he wants to go to. But in fact, this phrase does not always hide a refusal,” Shulzhenko explained.

According to the specialist, the company may have several more candidates with whom meetings are scheduled, and the final decision is often made by more than one HR (recruitment specialist - Lenta.ru note). She added that such a pause is necessary when it is necessary to discuss a candidacy with a manager, compare the experience of applicants, agree on conditions, or wait for a budget decision, so even a suitable and liked candidate may not receive a response for some time.

At the same time, Shulzhenko noted that the candidate himself may not stop looking for a suitable place while he waits for a response from a certain employer. While there is no specific offer and agreed conditions, she says, it is better to continue to consider other vacancies - this can also be indicated at the interview.

“It is better to take the phrase “we will call you back” literally, without looking for double meaning in the answer - the company is simply not yet ready to give a final answer. And then it is important for both parties to maintain communication: the candidate does not need to guess the attitude toward himself from a pause, and the employer should not force a person to wait for weeks for feedback without any explanation,” the specialist concluded.
