For the first time in 18 years, Ronaldo remained on the bench for the entirety of an official match for Portugal, after coach Jorge Jesus decided not to include him in the match that ended with the Portuguese team defeating Norway 2-1 in Oslo, in the second round of the group stage.
The last time Ronaldo was available for the national team and did not participate in a full official match dates back to June 15, 2008, when he remained on the bench against Switzerland in the European Cup, a match that ended with Portugal losing 0-2. As for the last match for the national team that he did not participate in before the match with Norway, it was a friendly match with Croatia in June 2024.
Jesus' decision was remarkable since the announcement of the starting lineup. Ronaldo sat next to Vitinha on the bench, while the coach chose to rely on Joao Felix and Gonzalo Ramos in the front line, along with Francisco Conceicao and Pedro Neto.
