The stormwater sewer improvement project on Shanghai Road in Taoyuan City is completed, using excavation-free construction methods to improve flood control resilience

There is a lot of effort in urban flood control hidden in the invisible ground! The Water Affairs Bureau of the Taoyuan City Government carried out the "Shanghai Road Rainwater Sewer Improvement Project in Pingzhen District" to improve the aging and damage of the existing rainwater sewer box culvert. It completed the repair of the existing double-hole box culvert, with a total length of about 130 meters. It strengthened and extended the life of the old facilities to improve drainage efficiency and reduce the risk of flooding.

Director of Water Affairs Liu Zhenyu said that the biggest highlight of this project is that it can "renew" the old box culvert that is more than 30 years old without large-scale road excavation. The Water Bureau uses the SPR lining construction method to directly repair and reinforce the existing box culvert. This not only eliminates the need for traditional excavation, backfilling and other construction procedures, shortens the construction period, but also significantly reduces the construction scope, reduces road closures, and maintains smooth ground traffic. The project started on October 3 last year and was successfully completed on August 21 this year. During the more than 10 months of construction, the Shanghai Road drainage box culvert still adhered to its position to maintain smooth drainage, serving the 120-hectare water collection area without any flooding problems due to construction.

Liu Zhenyu mentioned that rainwater sewers are usually hidden under the roads and cannot be seen, but they are an important line of defense to protect the city when heavy rains come. After the completion of this repair, the damage to the existing box culvert can be improved, the drainage function can be restored and improved, and the flood control resilience of the area around Shanghai Road can be further enhanced.

Liu Zhenyu emphasized that in the face of the increasingly frequent short-duration heavy rainfall, the Water Affairs Bureau continues to promote the construction of rainwater sewers and the improvement of old facilities, and introduces appropriate construction methods according to different local conditions, so that the ground will be less painful during construction and the underground will be more flood-proof and resilient. The city's drainage network will be repaired section by section so that when the next heavy rain comes, the water will go its own way and the citizens will go their own way.
