Iran claimed to have tested an anti-ship missile against a U.S. aircraft carrier for the first time, and the U.S. confirmed that it was attacked by a ballistic missile on September 5.

The Iranian Ministry of Defense previously released footage of the test launch of the latest Qassem Basir missile.

Senior Iranian officials claimed that Iran recently test-fired an anti-ship missile over a U.S. aircraft carrier for the first time. However, the U.S. has only confirmed that on September 5, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired ballistic missiles at a U.S. aircraft carrier and a missile destroyer. The two warships successfully evaded, and no U.S. personnel were reported to have been injured.

The Associated Press reported that Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei claimed in a conversation broadcast by Iranian state media that Iran tested a special anti-ship missile against a U.S. warship for the first time "48 hours ago." However, the Associated Press pointed out that it is currently unable to confirm whether the test he mentioned was the new "Qassem Basir" ballistic missile with improved capabilities that Iran announced at the same time.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards fired ballistic missiles at two U.S. Navy warships on the 5th, including an aircraft carrier and a missile destroyer. The U.S. military stated that the two warships successfully evaded multiple attacks and that no U.S. personnel were injured. The United States subsequently launched attacks on three Iranian crude oil tankers.

The Qassim Basil announced by Iran this time is a solid-fuel ballistic missile. The Associated Press reported that Iran claimed that the missile has a range of at least 1,200 kilometers and emphasized improving accuracy and warhead capabilities; however, there is currently no independent evidence to prove that this missile is the weapon that Rezai said was tested on U.S. warships.

The recent conflict between the United States and Iran has extended to the waters surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. The US military stated on the 5th that Iran's missile attack on US ships did not cause a hit, and then the US military attacked three Iranian oil tankers. There is still a clear gap between the statement released by the US and Iran's description of relevant maritime actions.
