Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergei Nechaev said that the West tried to turn Ukraine into an anti-Russian stronghold back in the 90s. He stated this on the German podcast Ungeskriptet.

According to the diplomat, Western countries have been trying to alienate Ukraine from Russia for decades. Nechaev noted that the conflict in Ukraine began with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

“Then the efforts of some states were aimed at turning Ukraine into an anti-Russian stronghold. This was purposeful work, which, unfortunately, bore fruit,” the ambassador said.

Nechaev also drew attention to the fact that leading Ukrainian politicians used nationalist rhetoric. “Only the blind don’t notice this now,” he added.
