American women's rights activist Gloria Steinem dies at 92

American women's rights activist and journalist Gloria Steinem has died at the age of 92, her representatives said.

"Gloria Steinem passed away peacefully at home in New York, surrounded by her loved ones and the many people who loved her. Gloria's nearly a century on this earth was not in vain, and she continued to fight for equality until the very end," reads a post on her Instagram page*.

Steinem continued to write and communicate with people until recent years, arranging meetings in her home. She wanted her home to later become a center for social justice movements, and the tradition of such meetings to continue after her death, the publication says.

Her representatives urged fans to light a candle in her memory and make a donation to the Gloria's Foundation charity.

According to NBC, Steinem dedicated her life to fighting for women's reproductive rights, preventing domestic violence and gender equality in the workplace. She became a major figure in second-wave feminism in the 1960s, advocating for greater rights for women, including the ability to obtain their own credit cards and enroll in universities that had previously been closed to them.

Steinem became widely known in 1963 after an investigation into the working conditions of employees of Playboy clubs, for which she worked there undercover for several weeks. She later co-founded New York Magazine and co-founded the feminist magazine Ms, which was the first national publication to feature domestic violence on its cover. In 1971, Steinem also helped create the National Women's Political Caucus to increase the number of women in government.

In 2013, Steinem received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, writes NBC.
