Zelensky warns that if there is no winter ceasefire, Ukraine will retaliate and make Russia miserable

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned Moscow at the United Nations on the 23rd that if Russia and Ukraine cannot reach a ceasefire agreement and stop attacking energy facilities before the onset of winter, Ukraine will launch a counterattack, making Russia "painful" in the coming winter.

Reuters reports that Ukraine and its allies are pressing ahead with a limited deal on energy infrastructure and Black Sea shipping before winter amid concerns that Russia could attack power and heating facilities again, while Moscow has shown little interest in launching talks to end the war.

Zelensky said at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on the 23rd: "Ukrainians understand that this winter may be very difficult for us. But in response, we will have no choice but to make Russia suffer."

While Russia has a larger arsenal of missiles and has continued airstrikes against Ukraine during the war, Kiev has also developed and deployed thousands of long-range drones to attack Russian warehouses, port infrastructure and oil refineries.

"That's exactly why we say cooling measures are needed before winter comes," Zelensky said.

He also called for stronger diplomatic action and noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping may have some influence over Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Xi Jinping did not attend the United Nations General Assembly and is expected to hold talks with US President Trump at the White House on the 24th. Zelensky met with Trump on the 22nd, and the two sides discussed the issue of implementing a ceasefire on energy projects.
