Han Byeong-do said, “Lee Jin-sook, you can’t be a member of the National Assembly… Form an ethics committee and immediately review the expulsion plan.”

On the 21st, the Democratic Party of Korea submitted a disciplinary plan against Rep. Lee Jin-sook of the People Power Party, who held a forum to reexamine the May 18 Democratization Movement with right-wing groups at the National Assembly.

This disciplinary bill submitted in the name of about 20 people, including senior vice-president for floor operations Chun Jun-ho, requests disciplinary action against this member according to the National Assembly Act for denigrating the May 18 Democratization Movement by holding a forum at the National Assembly.

Rep. Ahn Do-geol, chairman of the Jeonnam Gwangju Unified City Party, told the media after submitting the disciplinary plan, "It is a serious provocation that fundamentally challenges our constitutional spirit and oil arm spirit," and added, "It is secondary damage to the victims of May 18 and their bereaved families."

Disciplinary action against members of the National Assembly is decided by the Special Ethics Committee after listening to the opinions of the Ethics Review Advisory Committee. The level of disciplinary action includes expulsion, suspension of attendance for up to 90 days, apology at a public meeting, and warning at a public meeting.

However, the National Assembly Ethics Committee has not currently been formed.

In relation to this, floor leader Han Byeong-do said the day before, "We will form a National Assembly ethics committee and immediately review the bill to expel Rep. Lee Jin-sook and submit it to the plenary session to inquire about her qualifications as a member of the National Assembly. Lee Jin-sook, people like this should not be members of the National Assembly."

The Democratic Party is pursuing disciplinary action against Rep. Lee separately from the disciplinary review at the ethics committee level.

The intention is to pass a bill recently introduced by Rep. Lee Yong-woo of his own party and carry out the suspension of Rep. Lee Yong-woo from his duties.

Previously, Rep. Lee recently proposed an amendment to the National Assembly Act that would suspend National Assembly members who distort or disparage the May 18 Democratization Movement from performing their duties for up to one year.

Regarding Rep. Lee's bill the previous day, Representative Kim Min-seok said, "If expulsion is difficult due to the 2/3 (quorum) clause in the ethics committee composition and processing procedures under the current law, it is better to suspend qualifications with a majority vote at the plenary session of the National Assembly."
