In the elections of deputies to the legislative bodies of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation in 39 regions, there is high competition and a reduction in the number of registration refusals compared to 2021.

About 29 thousand candidates from five parliamentary parties and about 4,800 self-nominated candidates were nominated for local government elections.

MOSCOW, September 17 - RIA Novosti. Elections of officials in Russian regions and deputies of legislative bodies indicate a high level of competition, said Ella Pamfilova, Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Russia.

“As for the elections of senior officials (Russian constituent entities - ed.). We nominated 40 candidates by regional branches of nine parties. In this case, self-nomination was not provided for. The largest number of candidates were nominated in the Republic of Mordovia, Belgorod and Tver regions, six candidates each. Is this not competition? This is competition,” said the head of the Central Election Commission, making a report on the readiness of the electoral system for the upcoming elections.

Pamfilova added that 38 candidates from eight political parties were registered for the elections of senior officials. There were no refusals to register at this level of elections. For comparison, in 2021, 10 candidates were rejected, the CEC chairwoman noted.

“As for the elections of deputies, legislative bodies of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, there is also a very large-scale campaign of the second level, in 39 regions. And here, too, there is quite high competition. Here we also see the same trend in reducing the number of refusals to register. 254 candidates were denied registration. In the previous campaign in 2021, almost an order of magnitude more were denied – 2,403 candidates,” Pamfilova said.

According to the presentation, in the elections of deputies of representative bodies of municipalities of the administrative centers (capitals) of the constituent entities, 1556 candidates from 10 parties were nominated in single electoral districts, 1505 from nine parties were registered. After registration, 12 candidates dropped out on the basis of a personal statement, the CEC chairwoman emphasized.

Elections to local government bodies are traditionally the largest and one of the most difficult, she noted. According to the presentation, we are talking about more than 2 thousand campaigns for elections to local government bodies, in which 18 thousand deputy mandates and elective positions will be filled.

“The five parliamentary parties are most widely represented in the municipal elections. Together, they nominated about 29 thousand registered candidates, which is 85% of the total number of candidates at this level. This is very true. If you do not train politically in local government, then the resource accumulated before will disappear very quickly due to inertia, and already in elections at a higher level the party weakens,” Pamfilova emphasized.
