A European operation targets a network linked to the Camorra and stops a Syrian in Bern

A coordinated operation carried out by police agencies in Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland, targeting a network suspected of being linked to the Camorra, one of the most famous Italian mafia families in world culture, resulted in six arrest warrants and the search of 14 residential and commercial locations, and the seizure of drugs, suspected counterfeit money, weapons and electronic means, according to the Regional Crime Police Office in Baden-Württemberg.

According to what was reported in the German newspaper Der Spiegel, investigations in Switzerland led to a Syrian man residing in the Swiss administrative capital of Bern, where the authorities arrested him and searched sites related to him. According to the results of the investigations reported by the newspaper, it is believed that the drugs obtained by members of the network were coming from this man, making him one of the main leads in the drug smuggling route within the case. Data indicate that his role was not isolated from the rest of the suspects, but rather, according to the investigators’ hypothesis, was linked to the supply of drugs to members of the network. However, this information remains within the framework of suspicion and investigation, and does not constitute a final judicial conviction against him. The Syrian suspect was arrested in Bern during the international operation that also included Germany, Italy and Spain.

The operation itself received European support and coordination, as the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) announced that it supported the international operation that targeted a criminal network linked to the Italian “Camorra” organization. The operation included law enforcement agencies in the four countries, as part of cross-border cooperation to pursue activities suspected of being linked to drugs, counterfeit money and organized crime.
