Hunter Biden announces the launch of his own digital currency

(CNN) - The laptop computer of Hunter, the son of former US President Joe Biden, may take on a new, more profitable meaning. On Monday, the Wall Street Journal published news that Biden Jr. is launching his own digital currency.

Shortly after, Hunter Biden posted the symbol “$LAPTOP” on September 9 on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter), accompanied by a video clip containing statements from the media and officials in the administration of current President Donald Trump about the computer.

Biden had delivered the computer to a computer repair center in Delaware in 2019, which the police confiscated after 5 months. The computer contained emails, documents, and financial records, in addition to explicit pictures showing Biden’s son with women in hotel rooms, and other pictures of him using drugs.

The computer and its contents caused a sensation, especially in pro-Trump media, ahead of the 2020 elections.

Hunter Biden's lawyers have said the files were tampered with, and Biden has recently expressed his public displeasure, including the controversial laptop issue, on social media.

“What they found was evidence of a man who had suffered for a period of time from severe addiction to cocaine and alcohol,” Hunter Biden wrote in a post on X in June.

He added that prosecutors did not find evidence related to corruption or any crime other than that related to drug use.

Hunter Biden has also been vocal in his support of cryptocurrencies, writing on X that Congress “must truly understand the value and potential benefit of cryptocurrencies*,” calling “decentralized digital currency” the “inevitable future.”

It is noteworthy that Biden is not the first to launch his own cryptocurrency, as Trump and First Lady Melania Trump launched two currencies traded on the Internet before his return to office in January 2025, and they achieved profits amounting to one billion dollars, while most investors lost their money.

Investors tend to trade cryptocurrencies based on their popularity, novelty, or potential gains, and may not care about the risks.

According to a Wall Street Journal report citing informed sources, Biden's digital currency will be traded on the Coinbase Global platform, which did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.
