U.S. Supreme Court rejects Trump's executive order restricting birthright citizenship

(Central News Agency, Washington, 30th, Comprehensive Foreign News Report) The U.S. Supreme Court today rejected President Trump’s executive order restricting birthright citizenship, setting back one of his signature anti-immigration policies.

Agence France-Presse reported that the Supreme Court made this high-profile decision on the last day of this term, ruling by a 6-3 vote that almost all people born in the United States maintain the automatic right to obtain American citizenship.

After Trump returned to the White House last year, he signed an executive order requiring states to stop issuing status to the children of undocumented immigrants and those on short-term visas. Foreign reports previously reported that the order was ruled by a lower court to violate the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution; the Supreme Court agreed late last year to rule on the legality of Trump's order restricting birthright citizenship in the United States.

The majority opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts was supported by two other conservative justices and three liberal justices.

"Children born in the United States to parents who are illegal residents or temporary residents are within the 'jurisdictional jurisdiction' of the United States and are U.S. citizens from birth in accordance with the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution," Roberts wrote.

The Supreme Court's rejection of Trump's executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship was his third setback during this term.
