Statement on artificial intelligence and deepfake from the President of the Forensic Medicine Institute, Şimşek

Şimşek, in his statement to the AA correspondent at the International Forensic Medicine Days Congress, which was held for the 21st time this year in Antalya and where Anadolu Agency (AA) is the "Global Communication Partner", said that they are trying to give artificial intelligence a wide place in the congress this year.

Stating that at the congress, they evaluated the use of artificial intelligence in forensic sciences in the context of digital evidence, new generation DNA technologies, virtopsy (virtual autopsy) and advanced imaging techniques, Şimşek noted that experts and academics explained in detail how they use artificial intelligence in their scientific studies.

Şimşek, "Can artificial intelligence replace the expert witness?" Pointing out that the question has come up a lot lately, he made the following evaluations:

"Artificial intelligence should be used more as a decision support tool. We do not yet think that it can replace the expert witness because you touch a person's life in the expert witness role we perform. Therefore, I think the expert should make the final decision. If the expert is going to use artificial intelligence in his investigations, we think that the artificial intelligence system he uses should clearly reveal which data and which methods he uses. In this sense, there is a concept called 'explainable artificial intelligence'. The artificial intelligence used must be explainable. And the artificial intelligence algorithm it uses must also be open."

“Deepfake review requests are coming from the courts”

Stating that ATK's Forensic Information Department received requests to examine the images created with deepfake, Şimşek said that their research on this issue continues.

Stating that there is no accredited method to examine these in the world, Şimşek said, "Experts are trying to examine this with different methods, current scientific methods and give results. However, neither the European Network of Forensic Science Organizations, of which we are a member, nor our other colleagues, have an accredited method. We examine them with current experimental methods." he said.

The number of files is expected to exceed 1 million this year

Şimşek stated that ATK has a wide spectrum of expert networks, from psychiatrists to other branch experts, from electrical-electronics and computer engineers to biologists and chemists, and that these experts form the basis of the institution.

Stating that ATK has various specialized departments such as Physics Specialization Department, Forensic Information Specialization Department, Chemistry and Biology Specialization Departments, Şimşek said, "Our number of files is increasing every year. We examined approximately 600 thousand files in 8 months of this year. Last year, we examined more than 900 thousand files, approaching 1 million files. This year, at this rate, we will have examined more than 1 million files." he said.
