MEXICO CITY, September 26 - RIA Novosti. Mexico opposes the US embargo on Cuba and will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the island, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco said during the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

The US has maintained an economic embargo against Cuba since the early 1960s. In recent years, Washington has stepped up sanctions pressure, and Cuban authorities have repeatedly said that the tightening of restrictions was one of the main reasons for fuel shortages, power outages and a deepening economic crisis.

“Our commitment to the region explains the position that Mexico has taken for more than six decades in solidarity with the Cuban people and rejection of the embargo and any unilateral economic measures that are contrary to the Charter of the United Nations,” Velasco said.

According to the minister, Mexico will continue to send humanitarian aid to meet the most urgent needs of the Cuban population, since, as Velasco noted, relations between the peoples of the two countries do not depend on the situation and disagreements.
