Bernie Sanders announces bill to permanently ban and halt development of superintelligent AI

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Seungwook Kim = U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (Independent, Vermont), the godfather of American progressives, announced on the 3rd (local time) that he would propose a bill to permanently ban superintelligence artificial intelligence (AI).

According to the American online media Axios, Rep. Sanders is preparing a bill that would ban the development and use of superintelligence and halt the development of cutting-edge AI models until a government agency is established to monitor AI's capabilities and identify potential risks.

Representative Sanders defined AI with cognitive abilities that surpass that of humans as superintelligence AI.

“We must immediately halt the development of advanced AI and permanently ban superintelligent AI that can operate independently beyond our control,” he said, adding, “We cannot leave the future of humanity in the hands of a few big tech rulers.”

Representative Sanders's stance came on the same day that OpenAI declared the advent of the era of general artificial intelligence (AGI) with the launch of a new AI model, 'Astra'.

OpenAI introduced that Astra's ability to avoid human surveillance has been strengthened by completely hiding or controlling its thought process (CoT).

It is unclear how much support the bill promoted by Rep. Sanders will receive in the U.S. Congress.

This is because each member of the National Assembly has different opinions on AI safety reviews, regulations, and data center construction, and there is a lot of market demand for high-performance AI.
