CEOs of OpenAI and Antropic are asked to appear before the Australian Senate AI investigation committee.

The call for attendance comes just months after it was revealed that an out-of-control OpenAI model had hacked the database of Australia's health system, Medicare.

The Australian Medicare hacking incident is one of the cases that attracted the most attention among cases of AI agents illegally accessing external systems outside the United States.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly condemned this incident.

A spokesperson for Senator Sarah Hanson-Young (Green Party), who leads the AI ​​inquiry, said the committee is scheduled to hold a public hearing in Canberra on October 1 and has asked the CEOs of OpenAI and Antropic to attend the hearing.

The intrusion of OpenAI's agents into the Medicare system, one of Australia's most widely used government agencies, could lead the Australian government to strengthen AI laws it plans to introduce in 2027, technology policy experts said.

Reuters analyzed that this could put additional pressure on the already strained relationship between Australia and the United States due to the Australian government's ban on youth use of social media (SNS).

The Australian Senate's AI Inquiry Committee is investigating the potential impact of AI and data centers on Australian communities, industry, water and energy. It is one of several state and federal investigations surrounding AI.

“Altman and Amodei must respond to the investigation into the hacking of Australian government websites, appear before the inquiry and answer questions about what effective and lasting regulation is needed,” Hanson-Young said in a statement.

A few days ago, Australian Prime Minister Albanese disclosed the Medicare breach that occurred in June, calling it "unacceptable" and expressing "extreme concern" to Altman.

OpenAI said it only learned of the hacking in August. The company said the hack was not intentional and no personal information was compromised. There have been at least four hacks of Australian government websites so far.
