Alessandro Di Battista ready to leave Cuba after emergency surgery

The former M5S parliamentarian is expected to leave Havana on Friday afternoon, Italian time, after emergency surgery last week. The departure remains linked to the final medical checks. The Schierarsi association thanked the Cuban healthcare personnel.

Alessandro Di Battista should leave Cuba for Rome tomorrow, in the Italian afternoon. ANSA writes it. The return of the former 5 Star Movement deputy comes after the emergency surgery he underwent last week in Havana. The departure, however, remains conditional on the latest findings from the doctors.

Conditions and hospitalization

Di Battista is hospitalized in the intensive care unit on the fifth floor of the Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras in the Cuban capital. He had arrived at the hospital suffering from severe head pain, and it was there that urgent surgery was decided. Since his hospitalization, information on his state of health has been released with great caution: according to what his association Schierarsi reported, he is facing the phase following the operation "in the best possible way" and would like to return to his activities soon.

Family privacy

From the first days, family and friends asked for discretion. The choice to keep the return confidential until the last moment was strengthened by the cancellation of a first trip, initially scheduled for last Friday: it was preferred to wait until everything was ready before making confirmations. Next to him, from the beginning, are the mother of his two children, Sahra Lahouasnia, and Luca Di Giuseppe, friend and president of Schierarsi.

Tens of thousands of messages of support have poured into the activist's social profiles, with well-known faces from culture and entertainment and above all a large number of followers: "Go Ale", "We are with you", "Everyone is waiting for you". Among the many, also the former M5s exponent Alessio Villarosa: "Little by little I'm starting to breathe again too." In recent days, leading political figures had mobilized for him, from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, up to the leader of the M5S Giuseppe Conte, as well as journalists from Fatto Quotidiano, a newspaper for which Di Battista was in Cuba for a reportage.
