Increase in accidents on the way to school in Baden-Württemberg

The number of accidents on the way to school in Baden-Württemberg has increased. According to the Interior Ministry, last year the police registered 415 traffic accidents in which students had accidents on the way to or from school. That was 37 more cases than in 2024, an increase of 9.8 percent. The figures were published on the occasion of the start of the new school year.

In the accidents, 382 students were slightly injured and 43 were seriously injured, which corresponds to an increase of around 23 percent compared to the previous year. A student was killed.

According to the ministry, accidents on the way to school include traffic accidents involving children and young people between the ages of 6 and 17 who were injured or killed as active road users on the way to school.

Nationwide “Safe Routes to School” campaign

Interior Minister Manuel Hagel (CDU) warned that children could not yet reliably estimate speeds and distances. Because of their size, they would also be more easily overlooked. “Just a moment of inattention can have serious consequences.”

With the nationwide “Safe Route to School” campaign, police and municipalities want to increase security around schools. Among other things, increased traffic monitoring and traffic prevention are planned.
