Subtropical anticyclone brings extreme heat to Italy, with peaks of up to 40°C in the South and thunderstorms expected in the North

The subtropical anticyclone continues to dictate the Mediterranean Sea and Italy. On Sunday there will be a lot of sun in most areas; only during the next week is a rapid stormy break expected in the northern regions.

As regards temperatures, maximum peaks above 34-35°C are expected (locally up to 38-40°C in Sicily, Calabria and Puglia) in particular in the regions of Central and Southern Italy and the two major islands; a few degrees less in the North. Although slightly down compared to recent days, these are values ​​approximately 5°C higher than the reference climate averages.

An anomaly that is also having direct consequences on the seas, which now have temperatures that are nothing short of tropical, with peaks approaching 30°C on the Tyrrhenian Sea with direct consequences on marine ecosystems and on atmospheric events from next autumn. These anticyclonic conditions will accompany us until the start of next week, guaranteeing a clear prevalence of sunshine and temperature values ​​still higher than the climatic average, albeit slightly decreasing compared to the peaks of the last few days.

Only on Wednesday 2 September is the passage of a rapid storm front expected, with possible particularly intense phenomena, with the real risk of local hailstorms and gusts of wind. Once this rapid unstable impulse has passed, the anticyclone will forcefully return to dictate the law over the entire Mediterranean basin.

The start of the month of September will therefore still be characterized by sun and heat: summer 2026 has no intention of retiring yet.
