Sixth African heat wave arriving: temperatures up to 8 degrees above average

Having barely archived the fourth heat wave in mid-August and immediately hit by a fifth blaze, as short as it was violent, capable of reaching peaks of 45°C in the South and 40°C in the capital last Friday, Lorenzo Tedici, media meteorologist at iLMeteo.it, confirms that the sixth African heat wave is on the horizon.

The fragile truce before the weekend

Before the new furnace turns on, we will experience a few days of modest instability. Until Wednesday, some showers concentrated on the reliefs will bring some respite. This respite will have the advantage of keeping temperatures only slightly higher than seasonal averages. The only exception: the Capital which will still find itself fighting with its stubborn 36-37°C, confirming itself as the scorching exception of the Peninsula.

The "Heat Dome" is back: half of Europe in the oven

From Thursday, the music will change for everyone. The infamous Heat Dome (the dome of heat that crushes the hot air towards the ground) will swell again, dominating not only Italy but much of the continent. We will not suffer alone: ​​the subtropical hood will expand to Germany, bringing anomalous heat to Switzerland, France and Austria as well.

In Italy, temperatures will soar up to 8 degrees above the average for the period by the weekend. The anomaly will also hit the North hard: in Milan, peaks of 36°C are expected, a value which, if confirmed, would shatter the historical record for the month of September.

Waiting for autumn

The appointment with a normal climate is postponed to the next astronomical season. Fall will officially begin on Wednesday, September 23rd. Until then, we can only hope that the nights (which will become physically longer and longer) will manage to disperse some of this infinite heat, finally giving us a semblance of liveability.
