Sixth African heat wave in Italy: the reversal arrives with the Atlantic air

The sixth African heat wave has arrived but this time there is something new. Lorenzo Tedici, media meteorologist at iLMeteo.it, confirms that, after months of absolute subtropical dominance, from the middle of next week the European scenario will change radically, closing the doors to subtropical high pressure and reopening them to the North Atlantic currents.

The last days in the oven

We'll have to grit our teeth for a little while longer. Until and including Tuesday, the red-hot bubble expanding from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia will continue to suffocate Italy and parts of southern Europe. Extreme and heavy peaks are expected for the month of September: 36°C in Milan, 37°C in Rome and peaks of up to 38°C in the Foggia area.

The turnaround on Wednesday 9

Then, the turning point. Instead of Saharan air, Atlantic disturbances will once again take center stage. Maximum temperatures will drop, settling at a milder 27-29°C from North to South, with an alternation of sun, rain and fresh winds. This will be a weather pattern we haven't seen since mid-May.

The nightmare of accumulated energy

We will breathe again, of course, but we must not let our guard down. The stored heat will soon take its toll: with a Mediterranean Sea still measuring 28°C in Italy and 30°C in Spain, the impact with the cool Atlantic air will make storms and flooding rain almost inevitable. At least until the beginning of December, every violent phase of autumn bad weather will be the direct effect of this scorching record summer of 2026.
