Only 44.6% of public schools in Acre are accessible, reveals IBGE

♿ Among the countless difficulties faced by people with disabilities (PWDs) in Acre, studying is one of them. This is what the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) points out, given that only 46% of schools have just one accessibility resource in the state.

This Monday (21st) is the National Day of Struggle for People with Disabilities and the data was released by IBGE last Friday (18th). The numbers also show a gap between public and private schools: the rates are 44.6% and 97.5%, respectively.

Still according to IBGE, of the 1,484 public schools in the state of Acre, including state, municipal and federal, only 44.6% have at least one accessibility feature, such as ramps, tactile flooring and signs in Braille.

g1 contacted the advisory services of the Municipal Department of Education (Seme), the State Department of Education and Culture of Acre (SEE-AC) and the Federal Institute of Acre (Ifac) and, until the last update of this report, had not received a response.

According to the Inclusion Law No. 13,146/2015), also known as the Statute of Persons with Disabilities, all schools are required by law to have accessibility resources.

The obligation applies to both the public network and private institutions.

Accessibility in the bathroom

Another fact revealed by the survey is that only 29.1% of public schools in the state have bathrooms accessible to PWDs, compared to 95% in private schools. Overall, the provision of support resources for this audience reaches around 30.8% of schools.

Accessible bathrooms are spaces adapted to allow people with disabilities or reduced mobility to use them with safety and dignity.

The main features are wide doors, support bars, lower height of the toilet, sink and other items.

National scenario

When considering all education networks, Acre is second only to Amazonas, where only 41.7% of schools provide resources.

The states with the best accessibility rates in schools are Rondônia (86%), Tocantins (85.7%), and Pará (64%).

Data from the state of Acre are also well below the national average, which is 78.5%.

Lower income

Another section of the IBGE survey also shows that people with disabilities still face more difficulties in accessing the job market and have an income that is around 3.5% lower than people without disabilities.

While the per capita household income in homes of people with disabilities is, on average, R$1,047 per month, those without disabilities have an average income of R$1,087. Data on People with Disabilities and Social Inequalities in Brazil were released on Friday (18).

Also last Friday, wheelchair user Cláudio Balduíno, one of the residents of Travessa da Invasão, in the Canaã neighborhood, in Rio Branco, was interviewed by Rede Amazônica Acre. In the images, the man appeared having to face mud and holes, due to the lack of paving to move around.
